Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR): detention of children and young people with learning disabilities and/or autism inquiry - UK

uk80The committee are now accepting written evidence

The JCHR have been taking evidence on the inappropriate detention of children and young people with learning disabilities and autism. The committee has taken evidence both from individuals with learning disabilities and their families, and from Care Quality Commission and NHS England.

The committee are now accepting written evidence on the detention of children and young people with learning disabilities and autism and we would encourage you to respond. Submissions should be no more than 1,500 words and more information can be found here: https://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/joint-select/human-rights-committee/news-parliament-2017/youth-detention-further-evidence-launch-17-19/

The questions of interest for the written submission are as follows:

Whether the Government’s Transforming Care programme, which aims to significantly reduce the number of those detained inappropriately, has been successful and if not, why not.

If it has not been successful what needs to be done to ensure that the numbers detained are reduced more rapidly.

Whether the human rights of children and young people with learning disabilities and/or autism who are detained in mental health hospitals are being breached.

If, so how are they breached and what needs to be done to better protect them?

The CBF will be submitting a response to these questions, taking the opportunity to highlight the failure of the Transforming Care programme. We would welcome any comments/ suggestions for inclusion in our response.

ENVISAGE: ENabling VISion And Growing Expectations! Parents and caregivers, can you help with this?

canyouhelpFrom CanChild: Parenting is a tough task! Parenting a child whose development might be complicated by a disability can be even harder. We know that parents want to do a good job with their kids.

We also know that there can be a lot of extra stress and strain on parents as they work to do all the right things when their child has a disability.

We wish to engage with parents raising children with developmental challenges. We want to find out if our planned series of five weekly online interactive workshops, called ENVISAGE: ENabling VISion And Growing Expectations, is useable, understandable and acceptable to families of children with disabilities.

Our goals for this project are (i) to share with parents and caregivers some of the new and different ways we are thinking and talking about childhood 'disability', and (ii) to refine workshop content based on caregiver knowledge, experience, involvement and feedback.

We would love to know what you think!

If you would like to find out more, have any questions, or would like to express your interest to be involved in the study, please do not hesitate to contact:
