Rising demand and failing services bring England's children's services to crisis point – article and video

khan2Barnardo's teamed up with the Guardian newspaper to hold a 'roundtable' debate, demanding the UK Government rethink the delivery of vital services for children.

Barnardo's CEO, Javed Khan (pictured), co-hosted the discussion, which examined the current state of the country's service provision for the most vulnerable children and young people. He highlighted the increasing demand for help, while Government support decreases.

There was general agreement around the table that things 'can't go on as they are'. Mr Khan provided insight from Barnardo's, drawing on their extensive work transforming the lives of the most vulnerable children in the country.

A full write-up and video of the discussion is available at the Guardian website: http://mail.barnardos.org.uk/1K6H-2T81M-F7WU8N-1AA64X-1/c.aspx

Oxfam Development Casebook Series

Amazon: This casebook analyzes the lessons for working with disabled children learned from a radical and ambitious program initiated by Oxfam GB at the height of the war in Bosnia. As elsewhere in Eastern Europe, disabled children in Former Yugoslavia were traditionally cared for in centralized institutions which were run by State-paid professionals.

When State services began to break down under the pressure of war Oxfam assumed responsibility for one such centre in Tuzla. The emphasis of the centre gradually evolved from the provision of clinical services to the integration of the children into the local community. This alternative approach slowly won the support of the local authorities, and the project is now regarded as a model.
