53. Disabilities among refugees and conflict-affected populations

WOMEN'S COMMISSION FOR REFUGEE WOMEN AND CHILDREN, June 2008

Handicap International at Sources: This report is the culmination of a six-month project...to address the rights and needs of displaced persons with disabilities, with a particular focus on women (including older women), children and youth.

Based on field research in five refugee situations, as well as global desk research, the Women's Commission sought to map existing services for displaced persons with disabilities, identify gaps and good practices and make recommendations on how to improve services, protection and participation for displaced persons with disabilities.

52. Access to services for persons with disabilities in challenging environments: supplement to the seminar held in Amman (Jordan) in December 2009

DIXON, Catherine, BLANCHET, Karl (Eds) July 2010

Handicap International at Source: This is a collection of articles on research, policy initiatives and case studies on the theme of access to services based upon exchanges during a seminar on access to services in Amman in December 2009. It was written by Handicap International staff, field partners and international experts.

There are three sections: key concepts and references on access to services; challenging environments; and innovation to improve access. This resource would be useful for practitioners and policy makers interested in access to services for people with disabilities

We believe that local people have the power to find their own solutions to conflict. Our mission is to help them to make this happen. Local people are the key to preventing, resolving and healing conflicts. They are the best way to break recurrent cycles of violence and make peace last. And increasingly they want to move away from depending on outside help, towards building their own futures.

We help this strategic shift, and we add value to their efforts on the ground. Firstly, we raise funds for their programmes and offer management support and advice. Secondly, we build recognition for their work, to put them in touch with those in the wider world who can assist with funds and influence. And thirdly, we promote the concept of locally led peacebuilding to the international community, so that others will adopt our approach too

Last Mile Health℠ is creating a new health workforce to bring care to remote villages by transforming community health workers into real professionals -- so-called frontline health workers.

Frontline Health Workers (FHWs) are gifted women, former patients and community-based providers who are recruited and given the employment, training, equipment and supervision they need to perform and deliver primary care -- tackling the top five diseases that kill women and children in villages too far from doctors.
