My Dad is Different

DADISInspired by her own family's experiences, Wendy Desmet presents her book to all families

When their son Josh was born, Wendy Desmet and her disabled husband, Michael, began to plan how they would deal with Josh's inevitable questions about his father's wheelchair. Those plans developed into My Dad is Different.

In this new illustrated children's book, Wendy presents an educational and love-filled story designed to teach young children that disabled parents are different from other parents, but that doesn't make them any less loving or less of a parent.

Benefits may be linked to kids' jabs

The Government is considering requiring beneficiaries to immunise their children.

Extracts from an article by Isaac Davison and Kate Shuttleworth on 12th May 2012 on nzherald.co.nz

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett told the Herald:

"We see immunisations as important so when you're looking at those kinds of things, you question at what point should a social obligation be part of a requirement to get a benefit.

"Ministers have not made a decision on it, but it is certainly something we are discussing."

Under any changes, beneficiaries would be able to opt out of immunisation for conscientious reasons. But it would change the social obligation of people on welfare to vaccinate their children.

A Welfare Working Group recommended last year that the children of parents receiving a benefit should have to meet minimum health standards, including completion of the immunisation schedule.

Transition, dual sensory loss, life-limiting condition - can you help?

Alstrom Syndrome UK are looking to provide additional support to our young people who are living with a complex and progressive condition.

Although this effects all of our young people, we are currently focussing on developing the transition process for our young adults. Coming to terms with a life-limiting condition and living with a dual sensory loss is extremely difficult and requires specialised interventions.
