Families caring for a person with disabilities – free publication

cofaceFree download of 'The Family Dimension of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities'

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities explicitly acknowledges the critical role played by families for the promotion of human rights and the inclusion of persons with disabilities in society.

By voluntary will or obligation, families are particularly likely to undertake a caring role and remain the first and most immediate environment where people with disabilities can develop their potential and enjoy a fulfilling life. The concrete realization of the rights of persons with disabilities is strictly interdependent with the quality of life of their family members.

Sex and Relationships Education Training

The Children's Society's Sexual Health for Disabled Children and Young People project has been awarded funding from the Department of Health's Innovation, Excellence and Service Development Fund.

The project works to give disabled young people access to the same sex education and sexual health care as other young people through the training of professionals in care, youth work and education settings.  The project has used The Children's Society's Disability Toolkit www.disabilitytoolkit.org.uk website to make resources, advice and practice examples available for professionals working with disabled young people and those with special educational needs.  The project is also developing a practical resource for professionals to use when delivering sex and relationships work.

The Disability Advocacy Programme's Sexual Health Project has developed Sex and Relationships Education Training: ensuring disabled young people are involved and informed. This practical hands on training course around successfully delivering Sex and Relationships Education is specially written for professionals working with Young People with learning disabilities and special educational needs and is funded by The Department of Health.

This one-day training programme facilitated by a senior practitioner offers ideas and practical support for involving disabled young people in discussions about sex, relationships and staying safe.  The training covers: Safeguarding, working with parents, legislation, teaching methodologies, what to teach when, resources, difficult questions and more.  In addition we offer ongoing support and development of an action plan for your particular setting.  The training is delivered for teams at a venue arranged by you.

Young disabled people should have the same access to sex education and sexual health care as their non-disabled peers. It is their right recognised by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
