Helping parents of disabled children with sleep: 2-day workshop, Birmingham UK, February 2016. International relevance

sleep80This replaces the planned training in September 2015 and is at the same venue in the city centre with Julie Sutton as the trainer and with the same training materials (updated). There is easy access to two airports for delegates coming from other countries. The course is in English. We do not provide accommodation.

The cost is £335 per person to include lunches and refreshments.

The venue is ETC Venue Maple House, 150 Corporation Street, Birmingham B4 6TB. Tel: 0121 212 8200.

Website: https://www.etcvenues.co.uk/venues/maple-house

The dates are 9th and 10th February 2016.

The workshop provides a sound knowledge of sleep theory and equips professionals with the specialist skills to support families of disabled children. The topics to be covered are:

  1.
    1. Mechanisms of typical sleep, for examplesleep phases and cycle.
    2. Different categories of sleep disorder commonly seen in disabled children.
    3. Partnership working with families of disabled children.
    4. How complex health needs associated with disabled children impact on sleep.
    5. Understanding the role of medication in tackling sleep disturbance.
    6. Preventing sleep problems and developing positive sleep habits.
    7. Assessing sleep problems using diaries and questionnaires.
    8. Understanding how different strategies for change work and knowing how to apply them.

The training is specifically designed for frontline professionals who work with families of disabled children including health visitors, community children's nurses, school nurses and psychologists. This is an opportunity to gain practical skills and develop best practice in sleep work with these families.

PLEASE NOTE: This Birmingham training has changed from being a Handsel Project course to being an Interconnections course. This change follows the death in January 2015 of Dr Penny Lacey who was one of the three directors of Handsel Project. One of the consequences of this sudden and sad event is that the courses offered in the Handsel Project sleep initiative will be offered by Interconnections from 1st January 2016. Peter Limbrick was one of the three Handsel Project directors and is principal of Interconnections so the changeover will be more or less seamless.
