James started comfort eating when he was moved to a special school. Now he is an ambassador for healthy eating

hearts2James, 23, who suffers from cerebral palsy, says he changed his lifestyle after attending a disability awareness course. He realised that all the unhealthy habits being showcased at the event referred to him. He says:

As I was listening I thought 'that's me' so I decided I needed to deal with it and do something about it. I was sitting on my own at home doing nothing but drinking unhealthy pop and eating nasty food, and my weight had increased to 15 stone.

He's not only lost four stone in weight but has taken up cycling, drinks only water, and gets out of the house more. He also feels better about himself which has given him the confidence to go out more. Now James has become Heart Research UK's first Healthy Living ambassador, promoting the charity's work and encouraging others to lead healthy lifestyles through exercise and healthy eating. Are you a disabled student in higher education? THEN CLAIM IT!

AbilityNet (UK) has launched the DSA Claim it! campaign to encourage students in Higher Education to take up the Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs). One of the last education grants that doesn't have to be repaid, DSAs are available to any UK University student with a disability, on-going health condition, sensory impairment, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia, which may impede their ability to study.

The grant is provided by a Funding Body such as Student Finance England or NHS and can cover the cost of specialist technology (both hardware and software) as well as special support to facilitate the learning experience. More here.

Heart Research UK

Heart Research UK is a visionary national charity founded in 1967 by Yorkshire heart surgeon Mr David Watson MBE, who realised that patients were dying unnecessarily because of the lack of research into heart disease, especially surgical techniques.

More personally, he was frustrated at having to tell heart patients that there was little he could do to help them and wanted to do more, so he set up the charity to make it happen. Having paid for six of the first eight successful UK heart transplants, Heart Research UK still funds ground-breaking medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease.

Our current projects include research into improving rehabilitation for children leaving hospital after heart surgery, and providing funding so that the parents of child heart patients leaving Birmingham Children's Hospital can have vital equipment to monitor their health when they get home.
