Open letter to all Chairs, Trustees, Supporters and Friends of England's Children's Organisations – about dangers to our children
Dear Colleague, this letter is to alert you to the widespread concern and international evidence about dangers to babies, children and young people (and even foetuses) from long-term exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR).
This radiation is increasing by the day and comes from mobile phones and their masts, smartphones, wi-fi laptops and all other wireless toys and gadgets, wi-fi routers at home and at school, wireless baby alarms, cordless DECT phones, satnavs in cars and taxis and iPads - and other gadgets that are coming on to the market as I write this letter.
It is common now for children to be irradiated before birth and then in their homes, nurseries, schools and colleges as they grow up. There are no studies showing that this continual and long-term exposure is safe for children.
Because EMR is silent, invisible and odourless we are easily persuaded it is non-toxic. Most of us have never given it a second thought. But widespread evidence shows there are very great dangers. We know that the harmful effects are cumulative so symptoms appear after long-term exposure. EMR penetrates brain and body so symptoms can be both neurological and involve all parts of the body and its organs.
International research is showing us that symptoms can range from disordered thinking, memory loss, depression, sleep disturbance, nose bleeds and skin rashes to brain tumours and other cancers – which, as we all know, can result in death.
I am not asking you to be persuaded of the dangers by this letter. My appeal is that you take serious note that there is international concern and evidence and decide to properly explore it – and then come to your own informed view on the dangers of EMR to children.
The new technology is here to stay. But it is a relatively new industry that needs proper regulation and from which vulnerable people deserve all possible protection. For example, school laptops could be wired rather than wi-fi so classrooms would not need routers. There could be legislation to protect pregnant women from wi-fi in the workplace and babies from wi-fi baby alarms.
The situation at the moment is that worried parents, teachers and older children in England have nowhere to go for help.
They cannot go to the Department for Education, the NHS or the Children's Commissioner because they all believe EMR is safe or do not want to confront the issue. We have been in this desperate situation before when government and industry were telling us asbestos and then cigarette smoking were safe.
During the first half of this year I have been asking named CEOs of 20 children's organisations in England to study the evidence, come to an informed view on the dangers, and then become children's champions (assuming they decide prolonged EMR exposure is unsafe). As champions they would provide information to children, parents and teachers and offer advice and support.
The only information that children get now is from the industry that bombards them with expensive advertising about the desirability of the latest must-have gadgets.
Dear colleague, if you come to a view that children deserve better than this please try to influence your children's organisation to become a children's champion. If a group of children's organisations work together as children's champions they could pressure the government to write appropriate guidance and legislation to keep children as safe as possible.
Please contact me if you need particular information or if you would like someone to guide you through the literature. At the end of this letter I offer links to further information and links to the three reports of my appeal to twenty CEOs.
