A question about safe oropharyngeal suctioning

Acanyouhelp UK TAC Bulletin reader asks:

'I am looking for advice about training for safe oropharyngeal suctioning in the community for children who can cough effectively, do not need tracheostomy but cannot expectorate their sticky secretions when they are more copious than usual.

'It seems the current rules here limit what carers are permitted to do yet one young child in particular can choke on their secretions and needs emergency hospital attendance that might have been avoided if the suctioning had been deeper - as used by health professionals.

I would like very much to hear from people who have suggestions or experience to share on this.'
