Keeping Faith with Our Fellow Americans: Meeting the Needs of Hurricane Maria Survivors in Puerto Rico

Following the devastating impact of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico, Refugees International (RI) undertook its first-ever mission within the United States to examine post-hurricane conditions in the U.S. territory.

RI conducted the mission bringing our expertise in international disaster response to bear on the situation in Puerto Rico. Led by Climate Displacement Program Manager Alice Thomas, the mission found the U.S. response to be largely uncoordinated, failing to meet even basic shelter needs. 

RI urged Congress to provide generous funding for reconstruction efforts which focus on resilience. The RI report was widely covered in the press, including by the New York Times and Washington Post
